Dalton, Georgia – McMahan Law Firm, LLC has sponsored a scholarship through Kids’ Chance of Georgia for the daughter of one of the firm’s workers’ compensation clients. The scholarship will help pay for her education after her parent was seriously injured in a work-related accident.
Kids’ Chance of Georgia is a nonprofit that gives scholarships to the children of Georgia workers who were seriously, catastrophically or fatally injured on the job. Students between 16 and 25 can use the awards at colleges, universities, trade schools and technical programs anywhere in the country. The scholarships are paid for by law firms, insurance professionals, businesses and individual donors.
More than 700 students have received Kids’ Chance of Georgia scholarships, according to the organization. Nationwide, Kids’ Chance organizations have awarded more than 12,000 scholarships totaling over $46 million since 1988.
“When someone gets hurt at work, most of the conversation is about medical bills and lost paychecks,” said Barton C. Solomon, a partner at McMahan Law Firm who focuses on workers’ compensation and personal injury cases. “What doesn’t come up as often is what happens to the kids. A serious injury can put a family’s plans on hold, and college is usually one of the first things to go. We didn’t want that to happen here.”
A workplace injury can cut into a household’s income for months or longer. In Georgia, workers’ compensation income benefits generally replace about two-thirds of a worker’s average weekly wage, up to a weekly maximum set by state law. For many families, that gap leaves little room for tuition.
“Kids’ Chance does this work quietly for families all over Georgia,” Solomon said. “We’d like to see more firms and businesses in North Georgia get involved, because there are more kids out there who qualify than most people realize.”
