Chicago, Illinois – Three attorneys from Lane Brown, LLC attended the National Crime Victim Bar Association’s annual conference, held Sept. 9-11 at the Hilton Chicago. Managing Partner Mark A. Brown and Associate Attorneys Noah A. Brown and Martha A. Konovodoff spent three days with lawyers and advocates who represent crime victims in civil court.
The National Crime Victim Bar Association is a program of the National Center for Victims of Crime. Its annual conference covers current legal issues in civil cases brought by crime victims and is open only to NCVBA members. This year’s conference ran alongside the National Training Institute, which can bring together as many as 1,000 victim advocates, civil attorneys, criminal justice professionals and law enforcement officers.
For Lane Brown, it was also a chance to compare notes with attorneys who handle similar cases in other states and bring what they learned back to the firm’s clients.
“The laws and strategies involved in sexual abuse cases can be complicated and change often,” said Mark A. Brown, Managing Partner at Lane Brown, LLC. “Spending three days with lawyers from around the country dedicated to the same work we are doing can only make us better at it.”
Sexual abuse claims make up a large share of the firm’s caseload, including cases involving child sexual abuse, abuse in schools and abuse by clergy. A criminal case is brought by prosecutors. A civil lawsuit is brought by the survivor and can seek compensation for the harm done, including the cost of counseling and medical care. Civil claims can also hold institutions responsible when they fail to take action to prevent abuse.
“There were numerous presentations that will benefit our current and future clients,” said Noah A. Brown, Associate Attorney at Lane Brown, LLC. “We are all very motivated to provide compassionate yet aggressive representation.”
“Hearing how attorneys in other states approach these cases gives us ideas we can use right away here in Illinois,” said Martha A. Konovodoff, Associate Attorney at Lane Brown, LLC. “Our clients are the ones who benefit from that.”
During the conference, the Lane Brown attorneys also met journalist Chris Hansen, known for his years as a correspondent on NBC’s “Dateline” and for the “To Catch a Predator” series, which drew national attention to adults who target children online.
Illinois law gives survivors of childhood sexual abuse more time to file civil claims than many other injury cases allow. Even so, deadlines can still apply depending on the facts, and the rules for claims against public entities can be different. Attorneys at the firm say keeping up with those changes is one reason they put a priority on ongoing training like the NCVBA conference.
